May 21, 1944, provided Bomber
Command with two important vic-
tories. Major Prince Heinrich of
Sayn-Wittgenstein, Germany's 3rd-
highest-scoring night fighter ace,
was shot down in his Ju88 by a
British Mosquito. On this night,
he had already scored 5 kills,
bringing his total to 83. Another
German night-fighter ace, Haupt-
mann Manfred Meurer, was killed
near Magdeburg when his He219 col-
lided with a British bomber as he
flew in and out of the bomber
stream. Meurer had already racked
up 65 victories. These two men had
downed the equivalent of 3 wings
of Bomber Command aircraft <!!!!>.
By this time, Mosquitos were avail-
able in such quantities that they
could be dispatched to escort the
bomber stream in the conventional
sense - this was not previously
done. As a result, attrition among
German night fighter untis in-
creased heavily during the summer
of 1944, and thus the Mosquito played
a major role in the virtual collapse
of the Germn night-fighting system
by the winter of 1944.

ORDERS:
You are escorting a stream of bombers
to Magdeburg. Prevent German night
fighters from infiltrating your force
and destroying it. Remember - 2 "aces"
are out tonight!
