In the Bomber Stream

WEATHER: Niteowl

+ FuG 218 Neptun (see below!!!)

By August of 1944, Bomber Command had
resumed its attacks on Germany proper,
having been preoccupied during the sum-
mer with Overlord targets and licking the
wounds inflicted upon it the previous
spring. 24 major raids were conducted in
August and September, for the loss of
323 bombers out of 6952 sorties flown.
These were paltry casualties, being only
5% of the force. Bomber Command was now
able to strike anywhere without incurring
serious losses, such was the abysmal state
of the German night defenses. German SN-2
radars were jammed starting in mid-July,
and the new Neptun was jammed by September,
drastically reducing Nachtjagdkorps effec-
tiveness. The increased use of Mosquitos
contributed to the success of these opera-
tions for the RAF.
The important industrial center of Kiel was
attacked 3 times during these 2 months by
1220 sorties, devastating the city. Only
28 bombers were shot down (2%).

ORDERS: Infiltrate the bomber stream ap-
proaching Kiel and destroy as many bombers
as you can. During the August 16-17 and
26-27 raids, Neptun was not jammed, so the
map is usable. For a more challenging mis-
sion, fly the Sept.15-16 raid, during which
Neptun was jammed, so do not use radar if
you want to simulate this raid.
