RADAR: FuG 218 Neptun - jammed

By the end of 1944, the combination
of 100 Group spoofing and the
Mosquito menace had caused the
virtual collapse of the German
night-fighting system. This collapse
was most evident in the 13-14 Feb.
raid on Dresden, where German night
fighters remained grounded with no
fuel or no cohesive directions.
100 Group and supporting units used
"Mandrel" jamming devices to disrupt
communications between German night
fighters. Window was used (as always)
to deceive German ground radars, and
techniques for jamming individual
fighter radars were abundant. The
successful FuG 220b Lichtenstein SN-2
radar was jammed after the British
reverse-engineered a copy mounted in
a Ju88 which mistakenly landed in
Britain. The FuG 227 "Flensburg" pas-
sive sensor for RAF "Monica" tail- war-
ning radars was also captured, and
within a month "Monica" had been re-
moved from all RAF aircraft. Two months
after its first appearance, the new
FuG 218 Neptun search radar was also
jammed. Lacking any accurate method of
target acquisition, German night
fighters were limited to fumbling in
the dark. Even on nights where no Main
Force raid occurred, 100 Group would
fly, using all the tools in the toolbox
to simulate a real attack. German night
fighters were then forced to fly, using
up scarce petrol. Then, when landing,
they were often attacked by Mosquitos....
