Gunnery Practice

The He219 was the premier German
nachtjager of WWII, combining good
speed, armor protection, and excep-
tional firepower into a potent pac-
kage. Despite the fact that only
268 were delivered to the Nachtjagd-
korps and that only one unit (I/NJG1)
was mounted primarily on this type,
the Uhu ("Owl") achieved great suc-
cesses. After only 6 sorties had
been flown, 20 RAF aircraft had been
downed by this aircraft, including 6
of the much-feared Mosquitos. The
downfall of the Uhu came both on the
production lines and in the night skies;
it was never produced in enough quan-
tity to decisively affect the night
air war, and its effectiveness waned
as it became outnumbered and outflown.
The Mosquito was the Uhu's greatest
enemy, and it was not until the British
intruder began showing up en masse that
the Uhu started suffering significant
attrition. The 2 aircraft were comparable
in speed, but the "Mossie" was more maneu-
verable and the Uhu had a heavier armament.
In this training flight, you will engage
multiple waves of Mosquito NF.17s. Hone
your gunnery skills against this air-
craft, because you'll need them. You cannot
be shot down and you have unlimited fuel
and ammo.
