By August of 1944, Bomber Command
had been freed from attacking
Overlord-related targets and had
regained in excess the strength
previously lost during the violent
winter campaign. Harris made his
return known with 12 major raid in
both August and September. By now
Mosquitos were habitually operating
in conjunction with the bombers,
independently sweeping the target
areas for German night fighters.
With the appearance of the Mosquito
in numbers, German losses among its
experienced crew increased dramati-
cally. Because of crew losses, lack
of aviation gas, and jamming of even
their newest radars, the quality of
the German night fighter defence
sank like a stone. Not until 1945,
when the Me262B-series night fighters
arrived, would the Germans be able
to best the Mosquito.
Darmstadt, a major center of the
German chemical industry and a key
railroad trunk point, was attacked
twice in the fall. The second raid
(11-12 Sept.) featured 240 bombers,
and, more importantly, 14 Mosquitos
as "escorts." Despite good interception
conditions, the Germans only shot down
12 bombers.
ORDERS: You are on patrol near Darmstadt.
Destroy as many bombers as possible.
Watch out for Mosquitos!
