The problematical Mosquito spawned the
conception of many variants of Germany's
night fighters. Several modifications
of the He219 were toyed with for the ex-
press purpose of combating the trouble-
some British intruder. One expedient
was the insertion of a wooden section
for a third crewman to man a rear-firing
gun, developed as a Rustsatze designated
He219A-5/R4. The drag of the new "hump"
reduced speed, however, and this was dis-
carded. The He219A-6 was developed as a
stripped-down Uhu, with most of the armor
removed, but performance was insufficient
to counter newer Mosquito models. The
similar He219B-2 was equipped with DB 603L
engines, which gave a higher performance.
In addition, the He219B-2 had a special
high-altitude wing, which also improved
agility somewhat. Unfortunately, arma-
ment was poor (when measured against
the A-7 <g>), and there was little armor
for the aircraft. Few of these variants
were manufactured.
ORDERS:
Mosquitos of the Light Night Striking
Force continue to terrorize our cities
at night, flying virtually unmolested.
Intercept them over Berlin with your
unit of He219B-2s.
