Patrol "Amiese" Box

WEATHER: Moonlit
INSERTS: None
MIN.TIME: None
RADAR: Lichtenstein C-1 + Freya/
       Wurzburg ground control -
       jammed! (no map!!!!!!)

On the night of the Peenemunde Raid
(17-18 August, 1943), the Germans
pulled all of their night-fighters
out of their regular patrol boxes
and ordered them to Berlin, where
an attack was expected. When the
Germans finally figured out what
had happened at Peenemunde, night
fighters were ordered to make for
their boxes in Denmark and Holland
at top speed. Two fighters were or-
dered to a Himmelbett box code-named
"Amiese" over the neck of Denmark.
Once there, contact with ground con-
trol was lost as RAF jamming started
up again. Nevertheless, Unteroffizier
Benno Gramlich and his radar operator
bumped into a formation of Halifaxes,
but was only able to get a fix on and
attack one: "(The Halifax) burnt im-
mediately. Blinded by the jet of
flame, we nearly rammed him. When we
circled back over the sea, it was al-
ready lying on the water. It was uncan-
nily quiet in our cockpit, and then
one of us said what we were all thin-
king: 'Those poor chaps; none of them
got out....'"
ORDERS: Begin a patrol of Amiese box.
British bombers are expected to pass
through the area on their way back
from Peenemunde, flying on many dif-
ferent courses and at many different
altitudes. Destroy as many bombers
as you can.
