WEST OF EL GUBBI

In late 1941, Tobruk was receiving
constant attention from the Stukas of
Fliegerkorps X. On one fighter patrol,
Hurricanes from the No. 250 Squadron and
P-40 "Kittyhawks" from the No. 112
Squadron were 10 miles west of El Gubbi
when the radio announced a large inbound
strike. Climbing immediately at 11:40
hours, the P-40s flew as top cover, while
the Hurricanes engaged the Ju-87s. One
pilot shot down 5 Stukas by himself, as
the "Kittyhawks" kept the fighter escort
busy.
