ASSAULT ON BIZERTE

At the start of 1943, the Allies were
expecting a counterattack by von Arnim's
forces in Tunisia against the Allied
landings in North Africa.  To help
forestall this, B-17s escorted by P-38s
were sent to bomb the Axis ports of entry
in North Africa; notably Tunis and
Bizerte.  On the 2nd of January, 1943,
the B-17s were met by 50 fighters, and
the Allies claimed 17 destroyed and 10
more probables although with heavy loss
to themselves.

MISSION

Escort the B-17s to the port of Bizerte.
Enemy fighter opposition is expected to
be fierce, anticipate the new
FW109A4/Trop besides the usual Bf109s.
