"DEEP AND GOOEY"

After a devastating series of attacks on
Maison Blanche, Gen Spaatz concluded it
was too exposed for heavy bombers. He
moved the B-17s to Tafaraoui, where, as
the rhyme went, the mud was "deep and
gooey." On the 24th of November 1942, 37
B-17s went on a mission to bomb the
airfield and docks of Bizerte without
fighter escort. They encountered Bf109s
and FW190s, and lost two B-17s for a
claimed ten enemy fighters. The distance
from Tafaraoui to Bizerte was about 600
miles, right at their tactical range
limit.
