THE UNDERWATER BRIDGE

On 3 August 1943, elements of the German
320th Division were holding the line just
behind the Upper Donets River, near
Belgorod. The previous day they had
barraged a bridging attempt by the
Russians, causing immense casualties and
destroying a wooden bridge. Much to
their surprise on the 3rd, a large
Russian tank force had crossed the river
during the night and was attacking toward
them. With fighter-bomber and artillery
support, the Germans defeated the attack,
and after having eliminated the
bridgehead, discovered the Russian
subterfuge: a bridge had been built 20
inches below the surface of the water
with bridging tanks that had been driven,
one after the other, into the river in
order to span it. The bridge tanks were
promptly destroyed to prevent their
recovery later.
