******************************************************************************

BEFORE YOU READ THIS:
Make sure you've installed SWOTLManager first.

I. INSTALLATION

NOTE: I use C:\ in all examples below as the drive where
SWOTL is installed. If you have it installed elsewhere,
just substitute your drive letter whenever you see "C:\"

     1. Backup ALL of your aircraft SPC files (located in the
C:\SWOTL\AC\ subdirectory), both US and German.
        Example: COPY P47C.SPC C:\SWOTL\XXX\P47C.ORI,
where XXX is the location of your mod aircraft files.
(For SWOTLManager, this is suggested as \HANGAR).
It is important to use the ORI extension instead of
BAK, because debug automatically creates BAK files
if you ever debug these files.

Please note that this module uses all Lucasfilm TOD aircraft
     (P80, P38J/P38H, He162, & Do335). If you don't own one or
any of these expansion sets, here's what to do:
Copy your favourite SWOTL aircraft's SPC file to a new
SPC file corresponding to the TOD aircraft.
     (in the c:\swotl\ac subdirectory)
               COPY ME262A.SPC HE162.SPC (and DO335.SPC)
               COPY P51D.SPC P38H.SPC (and P38J.SPC and P80.SPC)
Also create an ORI back-up file for each:
          COPY ME262A.SPC C:\SWOTL\XXX\HE162.ORI (and DO335.ORI)
          COPY P51D.SPC C:\SWOTL\XXX\P38H.ORI (and P38J.ORI and
               P80.ORI),
where XXX is the subdirectory that you keep your mod
aircraft in, for example \SWOTL\HANGAR, used with
          SWOTLManager.
You will also need to create a corresponding icon file:
      (in c:\swotl\fe\) COPY ICN262.PAC ICN162.PAC (and ICN335.PAC)
                   COPY P51DICN.PAC P38ICN.PAC (and P80ICN.PAC)
Finally, if you own NONE of the expansion disks, you will need
to create a "fake" CAMOEXP.PAC file:
     (in c:\swotl\ac\) COPY CAMOFLAG.PAC CAMOEXP.ORI

      NOW YOU'RE SET!

     2. Make back-up copies (ORI extension, again) of all the
SWOTL files listed below, placing the ORIs in the same
        directory as the "real" files.

C:\SWOTL FRONTEND.OVL
          NOTCAMP.OVL
          FLIGHT.OVL
          DEMO1.DEM
          DEMO2.DEM
          DATA.OVL
C:\SWOTL\FE TARGETS.STR SCHOOLA.PAC
               MENUS.PAC SCHOOLG.PAC
               CREDITS.PAC BGERMSTR.PAC
               CAMPTEXT.PAC BAMERSTR.PAC
               HISTA.PAC BRIEFSTR.PAC
               HISTG.PAC

C:\SWOTL\AC VGA.PAC

     3. Copy the SWUSA files into the appropriate directories.
If you obtained SWUSA by mail, its a simple matter of
moving to each directory on the SWUSA disk and copying
all the files to the corresponding SWOTL subdirectory
on your hard disk. Ex: COPY B:\FE\*.* C:\SWOTL\FE
Some copies may have all the files in a particular
directory zipped up together to conserve disk space.
Use ARJ to get them out and into the proper SWOTL
        directory on your hard disk:
        ARJ E FILENAME.ARJ -E X:\SWOTL\Y,
where X is the letter of the drive SWOTL is located,
and Y is the path to the SWOTL subdirectory ( same as
        the one you are copying from) - \SWOTL, \FE, \CP, \AC,
        \HANGAR, \MIS.
If you obtained SWUSA via a BBS or have a zipped copy,
you'll need to unzip the whole thing and copy the SWUSA
     files to the indicated directories:

C:\SWOTL FRONTEND.US2 DEMO1.US2
          NOTCAMP.US2 DEMO2.US2
          FLIGHT.US2 DATA.US2

C:\SWOTL\FE TARGETS.USA MENUS.USA
               CREDITS.USA CAMPTEXT.USA
               HISTA.USA SCHOOLA.USA
               HISTG.USA SCHOOLG.USA
               BGERMSTR.USA BAMERSTR.USA
               BRIEFSTR.USA

C:\SWOTL\AC VGA.SUN
               VGA.NIT

C:\SWOTL\CP All INT files.
COPY (location of SWUSA) *.INT C:\SWOTL\CP
               All PNL files.
COPY (location of SWUSA) *.PNL C:\SWOTL\CP

C:\SWOTL\HANGAR (or wherever you store mod aircraft)
               XSF17.EXP TA183A.EXP
               XSF15A.EXP ME262C.EXP
               XFI3.EXP P1101.EXP
               XB42.EXP ME562A.EXP
               XB104.EXP ME263B.EXP
               XFB23B.EXP GO229C.EXP
               HE162C.EXP HORTON.EXP
                                 DO335J.EXP

Note that each .EXP file has a corresponding
.TXT file, which must also be copied over to
               \SWOTL\HANGAR.

NOTE: If you place these files in another directory, you MUST
change the SWUSA.BAT files so that SWUSA installs the
           aircraft correctly.

C:\SWOTL\MIS All MIS files.
COPY (location of SWUSA) *.MIS C:\SWOTL\MIS
               All TXT files.
COPY (location of SWUSA) *.TXT C:\SWOTL\MIS

Remember, if you don't put these files in the correct place, the
installation program will not function as it should. The location
of the aircraft EXP files does not matter AS LONG AS you change the
SWUSA.BAT file to reflect the subdirectory where you store them.

II. BEGINNING PLAY!!!!!!!

1. At the C:\SWOTL prompt, type: SWUSA X, with X being the drive
letter on which you have SWOTL installed. This BAT file
automatically copies all the aircraft into the correct slots
and all the SWUSA files over their SWOTL counterparts.

2. Now activate Anthony's SWOTL Manager TSR program, if you have it
and are capable of running it with SWOTL. At the C:\SWOTL prompt,
type: SM

3. At the C:\SWOTL prompt, type: SW to start the game.....

III. PLAYING SWUSA

1. Training Missions:
At least one training mission is present for each major SWUSA
aircraft type except for the Horton HOVXIII German bomber. These
missions usually have you flying aircraft with combinations of
unlimited damage, ammo, fuel, or all 3. This is a good place to
practice your dogfighting, bombing, air and ground missile delivery
techniques, as well as get a good feel for the capability of an
aircraft you might not know too much about. Your piloting skills
can make the difference between life and death in SWUSA. See the
next section for an explanation of the aircraft types in the menu
bars.

2. What If Missions:
This is the HEART AND SOUL of SWUSA. There are 85 "WHAT IF"
Missions between the two sides, and each major aircraft is
covered by at least 2. There are some truly EPIC battles
included. Some explanation of the menus may be needed:
TA+ME stand for either the Ta183 or the Me262c which I lumped
togehter under one aircraft type. The same with Go229+Horton.

The basic concept of this module is a hypothetical extension
of the war through the years 1945-1947. Both sides have a
jet airforce that will face each other in a mutitude of
exciting and challenging senarios. All of the missions are
designed for night or sunset, your choice. No missions were
intended to be in the daylight. If you fly for the Allied
side it will be as a member of the U.S. Secret Airforce. While
flying for the Axis forces you'll fly for the German Luftwaffe.
If you have a slower computer you might have to turn down the
detail, because most missions use the full amount of planes
possible. You will also find some surprising hexed features
in most missions. If you're smart you'll never ASSuME anything
about the missions, just keep you eyes peeled. I would suggest
a little practice BEFORE you try the "WHAT IF" missions to get
the feel of the newer Jets. Most of the missions give your side
the INITIAL numbers advantage, however you WILL most likely be
   outnumbered.

3.U.S vs German JETS

What we wanted to accomplish here was realism and balance. All
of the mods were carefully constructed with a specific role(s)
in mind. However, most of the U.S mods were built to counter a
   specific enemy jet also.

All of the U.S. jets while fictional are very close to a real
   counterpart(ie.FH-1 Phantom,F-84,F-86,F-94 etc.). The German
jets are mostly mods of designs that the Germans did'nt have the
time or the resources to build at the end of the war. We strongly
feel however, that the planes and their flight models are within
normal limits for the specs, no super planes here.

As you might imagine, the German jets are durable and have
a speed and slight firepower advantge over most of the U.S.
jets. However, what the U.S. jets lack in speed they make up
for it by being more maneuverable than their German counterparts.
Overall, it is most likely going to come down to "YOUR" piloting
skills or lack thereof that will send you home happy or not at
   all<G>.

4.NEW WEAPON SYSTEMS

Greg "Sturmer" Smith's discovery of missiles has been taken a step
forward in SWUSA. Both sides have some newer advanced technolgy.
The U.S. has two new air to air missiles, the Tactical Air to Air
Missile or TAAM-1A and the Fragmentaion Air to Air Missile or
FAAM-1M. Both have a range of 2.04 miles. The U.S. also has two
new air to ground missiles, the Strategic Air to Ground Attack
Missile or SAGAM-1 and the Fragmentation Air to Ground Attack Missile
or FAGAM-1G. Both have an range of 1.8 miles. The U.S. has introduced
heavier 2,500 and 4,000 lb bombs. In addition, the XFI3 carries the
only Gatlin Cannon in the sim, with a SPECIAL thanks going out to Tom
   Dungan for HIS invention!.

The Germans have two new missiles, in the Fritz X air missile with
a range of 2.17 miles and the 75mm Air Fragmentation Missile with a
range of 1.1 miles. The Fritz X is an air to air missile, and while the
75mm AFM can be used in the air it is mainly a ground attack missile.
The Germans also have new Anti Aircraft Artillery or AAA batteries in
place of the old flak(just as intense!!!).

In a slight change in history <G>, the Germans have the A-bomb not the
U.S.(that's right the GERMANS have the bomb)<G>. An idea that is not
too far fetched considering the radical scientific designs they had at
the time. Yes you guessed it they are dropping the bomb on England.

5. INSERTS:
Some of the missions have plane subsitutions and will instruct you
which plane needs to be replace. You will have to exit the mission,
switch planes, then re-enter the mission for the switch to work using
   the SWOTLMANAGER.

6. RADAR:
Here's a list of radars in SWUSA:
SCR-720 AI (USA): Intercept radar. Full use of the map at all times.
SCR-720C AI (USA): Intercept radar. Full use of the map at all times.
Usually augmented by APS-13 Tail Warning Radar.
FuG 240 Berlin (Ger): An advanced centimetric-wavelength radar that
of which only a few copies were made by the end of the war.
     Allows full map use.
FuG 244 Bremen (Ger): Similar to Berlin above. Allows full map use.

Neither side has an advantage here, full map use is the norm.

7. Tours of Duty and Campaign Games
All of the planes except for the Horton,XB-104 and the XFI-3
translate well in TOD. The Horton does not work at all because
it is sent on intercept missions. The XB-104 works well on bombing
missions, but it is not the best dogfighter. This does not stop you
from doing a TOD with the 104 it just makes it a little unfair to
you<G>. The XFI-3 works great, except it has no bombs. On bombing
missions you only have your missiles and cannon. It still is a kick
in TOD despite its lack of ground firepower.

8. NEW TARGET TYPES:

We have changed many of the target types to reflect a more modern
war and it's industries. Munitions sites are now Communications
Headquarters, some of the bridges have been changed to Hydroelectric
Dams, V-1 sites are now V-2 missile and radar sites, V-2 sites are
now V-3 A-bomb sites, Ballbearing plants are now Radar Manufacturing
Plants. Flak batteries are now AAA Anti Aircraft Artillery batteries.
All of these changes are reflected on the map and in the icons. The
campaign and the goals will change to reflect the new targets and
industries. For instance Communications Equipment in stock replaces
   munitions in stock.

9. TURRET FIGHTING AND YOU:

Several of the jet bombers in the module have turrets, THEY ARE THERE
FOR A GOOD REASON, USE THEM!!<G>. Sorry about shouting, but I must
emphasize that you should have it activated AT ALL TIMES, and you
should man it as much as possible yourself. The computer gunner will
shoot only if the target is real close. Effective use of the turret
can help you survive and fight on another day. Unfortunately, the
only bobmer that has auto-pilot is the XB42. The other bombers must
be lined up on course BEFORE you switch to the turret to avoid drift.
***CAUTION**** DON"T PRESS "B" ON ANY BOMBERS OTHER THAN THE XB42
AND THE HORTON, IT WILL CAUSE A FULL LOCKUP. The turreted bombers
were intended to dive bomb so there is NO bombsight except for the
   XB42 and the Horton.

Fighting against the U.S XFB23B,XB104 and German Horton is a very
deadly task if done incorretly. The best way to approach these VERY
durable jet bombers is from below . Any other approach is an easy way
   to get shot up!.

ENDING THE GAME
When you leave SWUSA, at the C:\SWOTL prompt, type:
     NOSWUSA X,
with X being the drive letter where you have SWOTL installed.
Everything will automatically be copied back to normal.

My thanks to everyone on Prodigy's SWOTL GROUP who helped with this
project, including Greg Smith, Keith Heitmann,Tom Dungan, Ken Braatz,
Chris Rice, and many others.

Final word: Please do not sell this product or charge any fee for
its use. This is freeware! It is not an attempt to infringe upon
Lucasfilm's fine SWOTL product; it is an ACCESSORY which will
hopefully increase the longetivity of the game. All owners are
authorized and encouraged to pass SWUSA along to friends and up-
load it to any PBBS or BBS. My only request is that you refrain
from altering any of the files unless I have sanctioned such a
change. This will allow the upgrade process to be centralized
and universal. However, please feel free to create and distribute
custom mission sets and TOD disks for SWUSA.
